How Does Learning Happen?

How Does Learning Happen? was developed to support Ontario’s renewed vision for the early years. It is a resource intended to define and support pedagogy (how children learn) and support program development. It is organized around the fourFoundations for Learning: Belonging, Well-Being, EngagementandExpression.

Each foundation defines goals for children, expectations for programs and questions for reflection to promote positive learning through collaborative relationships with children, parents, colleagues and community. At Kingston Day Care we use the principles, foundations, goals and expectations to provide the best experiences and outcomes for children, families and educators.

Goals For Children

Expectations for
Kingston Day Care Educators

Every child has a sense of belonging when he or she is connected to others and contributes to their world.

Early childhood educators cultivate authentic, caring relationships and connections to create a sense of belonging among and between children, adults, and the world around them.

Every child is developing a sense of self, health, and well-being.

Educators nurture children’s heathy development and support their on-going sense of self.

Every child is an active and engaged learner who explores the world with body, mind, and senses.

Educators provide environments and experiences to engage children in active, creative, and meaningful exploration, play, and inquiry.

Every child is a capable communicator who expresses himself or herself in many ways.

Educators encourage and foster communication and expression in all forms.

Creative Learning Environments

Kingston Day Care's Early Learning Program supports School ReadinessKingston Day Care strongly acknowledges the importance of Play-Based Learning; our early childhood educators work together to plan an emergent curriculum that is based on their on-going observations and reflection of the children’s interests; activity planning is on-going and dynamic. Play is recognized as a vital path to learning as it capitalizes on children’s natural curiosity and enthusiasm to absorb new information. The physical space in our early childhood settings is carefully planned out as we believe it plays a key role in learning and development. The ability to measure the excellence of our child care programs involves the use of the Early Learning for Every Child Today (ELECT) Continuum of Development. This is not a tool to assess children’s progress against a set of desired outcomes, but rather a tool that provides a reference point for our early childhood educators as they plan and enhance experiences that will support the children’s on-going learning and development; it is used as a base for observation and discussion of the children’s learning.  The Continuum of Development is made up of root skills from birth to eight years of age and is organized into six domains ~ Social; Physical; Emotional; Communication/language/literacy; and Cognitive.

Kingston Day Care is committed to achieving high standards & quality assurance by promoting and providing Professional Development opportunities for our early childhood educators and support staff on an on-going basis throughout the year.
