CURRENT PARENTS, PLEASE NOTE: If your child is in a program where his or her birth date exceeds the program age group range, rest assured your child’s developmental needs will be addressed. Children will chronologically move to the next age grouping however there may not be a space for your child in the next program group.  This does not mean that your child care costs will be adjusted to match your child’s chronological age as opposed to the program group they are enrolled in.

Play-based learning at Kingston Day Care

Kingston Day Care’s Play-Based curriculum-planning relies on free-play time to help our early childhood educators reflect on each child’s interests and developing areas. Free-play time allows children to engage in desirable play: reading a book, taking care of their baby, pouring and dumping in the water table, etc.

Not only does this time allow for child-oriented activities, but observations are now recorded in the form of a web. These webs are consistently being reflected upon and adjusted based on teacher observation and assessment. It is a great visual for the teachers, as well as the parents!

The children love KDC’s Play-Based curriculum format and the continuation of developmental growth is at a rapid rate! Our Parent Information Boards are also a key component to the success of our Play-Based Programs.

We recognize ‘play’ as a vital path to learning as it capitalizes on children’s natural curiosity and enthusiasm to absorb information.  Our physical environments are carefully planned out as they play a key role in learning and development.

ELECT (Early Learning for Every Child Today) describes how young children learn and develop, and it provides a guide for curriculum in Ontario’s child care settings.  The categories of development focused on are physical, social, emotional; communication/language/literacy; and cognitive.

The Continuum of Development is used at Kingston Day Care as a tool to provide a reference point for our early childhood educators as they plan and enhance experiences that will support each child’s lifelong learning and development.
